Welcome back.
World renowned cellist Chang Han-na is on a seven-city tour in the country‚ much to the delight of her fans here.
The 25-year-old gained international recognition at age eleven when she won the Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris.
Now for this installment of Today's Talk‚ she sat down with Arirang News earlier to share her thoughts on music and more.
MIN SUNHEE‚ ANCHOR: "You've had quite a few tours here in Korea‚ what makes this latest tour different from the others that you've had in the past?
CHANG HAN-NA‚ CELLIST: "This tour is very unique because it's the first time that I've visited Korea in the autumn as a cellist.
It's the first time I'm seeing Korea in colors in foliage and leaves in brilliant colors.
Also‚ it's unique because so far I've not really performed many Romantic works‚ works from the Romantic period‚ but this time‚ with the leaves turning color and also because I want to play works by Chopin and Schumann live for my fans here.
So it's the first for both reasons."
MIN SUNHEE‚ ANCHOR: "You just mentioned two of the composers whose works you've decided to perform‚ but I understand there are three composers.
Could you tell us about the third composer and why you've chosen these three composers?
CHANG HAN-NA‚ CELLIST: "The whole program‚ the framework is formed by Schumann and Chopin.
They were extremely active during the beginning of the Romantic period‚ the start of Romanticism in Europe beginning of the 19th century.
They were born in the same year‚ 1810‚ so they were the same age and they both died very young due to different illnesses.
They left behind a really famous love legacy.
Schumann with his wife Clara‚ of course‚ which is very well known and Chopin equally well known with George Sand‚ the novelist.
They inspired music in their lives.
They were extremely romantic.
Romantic‚ I define‚ as being very honest about your feelings‚ about the uncertainties of human existence that one is governed not only by reason and logic‚ but also by sub-conscious urges and feelings.
Right in the middle of the program‚ I have put in Shostakovich.
He was a Soviet composer.
This year is the 100th anniversary of Shostakovich's birth so really in order to commemorate the greatness of his genius‚ a courage that he had in preserving his musical genius that he was indeed truthful to his talents and that he did manage to be extremely honest about his feelings in his music."
MIN SUNHEE‚ ANCHOR: "What impact have your academic pursuits at Harvard University had on your professional career?
CHANG HAN-NA‚ CELLIST: "My studies at Harvard have helped broaden my horizons‚ just living daily life on a daily basis‚ one has many thoughts‚ but somehow I feel like my whole perspective of looking at things‚ of thinking‚ have extremely broaden from studying philosophy and psychology and therefore I naturally expect that the way I live as a musician will also be influenced by my studies.
However‚ I do think for a musician the most important thing is the musical voice‚ the inner voice that you are born with.
It's something very innate‚ almost instinctive.
It's your sixth sense as a musician and that's what makes me Han-na Chang and that's what makes another musician that person.
To have a musical character‚ a musical personality‚ your own voice is extremely important and that's something you are born with.
MIN SUNHEE‚ ANCHOR: "And speaking about those innate qualities‚ do think talent is innate or do you believe it can be nurtured?
CHANG HAN-NA‚ CELLIST: "I think it's both.
I think it has to be both.
One has to be born with talent‚ but if you don't nuture it‚ it's going to be asleep and after a certain period of time‚ it's goin
