SON HEE-KYUNG‚ REPORTER: I hope you're ready for some excitement‚ because I have an energetic dance performance for you.
"Burn the Floor‚” an internationally recognized ballroom dance troupe‚ is coming to Seoul next week‚ as part of its Asian tour.
Consisting of championship dance couples from more than 10 countries‚ including Germany‚ Italy‚ and the United States‚ the troupe will showcase 13 different dances.
AHN CHAK-HEE‚ ANCHOR: And what would those be?
SON HEE-KYUNG‚ REPORTER: Well‚ there's the rhumba‚ the samba‚ the cha cha‚ the waltz‚ the salsa‚ and the tango.
The two-hour-long show is packed with hot dance moves‚ and a hint of rock n' roll style.
The performance is eye-catching too.
The dancers are wearing original costumes by Versace and Moschino‚ two fashion houses involved in the production of over 600 outfits‚ 300 pairs of shoes‚ and 60 hats.
AHN CHAK-HEE‚ ANCHOR: How was this dance troupe formed? It probably wasn't easy to gather the world's champions.
SON HEE-KYUNG‚ REPORTER: Good point. It took the producer around a year-and-a-half to do that.
He says the original idea for the production came‚ after he saw a ballroom and Latin dance performance‚ staged at Sir Elton John's 50th birthday celebration‚ in London in 1997.
AHN CHAK-HEE‚ ANCHOR: I hear more than two million people around the world have seen this show.
SON HEE-KYUNG‚ REPORTER: Yes. And after Seoul‚ the troupe will go to cities in Japan‚ before it wraps up its tour.
AHN CHAK-HEE‚ ANCHOR: Alright‚ let's move on. You also have a unique ballet performance. Why's it so special?
SON HEE-KYUNG‚ REPORTER: Well‚ it's an all-male American ballet troupe.
"Les Ballets Grandiva" will perform in Korea‚ for a nationwide tour.
The performance pokes fun at ballet‚ with exaggerated twirls and jumps in the air.
It aims to draw a new audience‚ as well as support the next generation of ballerinos.
Included in the show are humorous parodies of classical ballets‚ such as "Pas de Quatre‚” and "Swan Lake."
Founded in 1996 by artistic director Victor Trevino‚ all 19 members are from top-class ballet troupes‚ such as Russia's Kirov-Mariinsky Ballet.
AHN CHAK-HEE‚ ANCHOR: We've gone from ballroom dancing to ballet. What else do you have?
SON HEE-KYUNG‚ REPORTER: Well‚ to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Mozart‚ Koreans will get a chance to see two of his operas.
First up is "Don Giovanni‚” based on the Spanish legend Don Juan.
The two-act opera is said to be one of the greatest pieces of music ever composed‚ and is known as a playful drama.
It's not completely a tragedy or a comedy.
AHN CHAK-HEE‚ ANCHOR: It's the story of a womanizer‚ right?
That's right. The lead role of Don Giovanni has been double cast with baritone Gino Quilico‚ and bass Sim In-sung.
SON HEE-KYUNG‚ REPORTER: After that‚ the lively opera‚ "Magic Flute‚” which is full of fantasy and imagination‚ will be performed by a Korean cast.
The opera is in the form of a singspiel‚ meaning there's both singing and spoken dialogue.
AHN CHAK-HEE‚ ANCHOR: Alright. Now what's this about an annual festival in Icheon?
SON HEE-KYUNG‚ REPORTER: Well Icheon is only about an hour's drive southeast of Seoul and its annual ceramics festival kicked off today.
The event is designed to give visitors‚ especially students an opportunity to learn about Korean ceramics.
Visitors can see how ceramic pots are made‚ and try crafting some of their own masterpieces.
