Koreans simply enjoy seeing people dance‚ and they also like to try it themselves.
And so for tonight's Info Plus‚ Min Sun-hee joins me with more.
So Sun-hee tell us about this dance craze gripping the nation.
Well‚ Chak-hee‚ the interest has its roots in television talk shows and variety programs featuring local entertainers.
It doesn't matter whether you are an actor‚ a model‚ a comedian‚ or even a ballad singer‚ if you're part of the domestic entertainment industry‚ and you want to be known‚ you have to know how to dance. Often‚ on television programs‚ these entertainers are asked whether they have any other talent that their fans have yet to see.
A growing number of entertainers choose to show off some fancy dance moves‚ imitating pop idols like Rain‚ also known as "Bi" in Korea.
The public‚ especially the young people‚ enjoy seeing their favorite stars project themselves in this manner‚ and quite a few "hohum" careers have actually gotten big boosts from successful dance routines.
And this in fact is where all the interest in dance started.
You mean people would watch the entertainers and then try to learn the moves themselves?
Yes.
In recent years‚ the number of private dance schools has increased dramatically.
Many teenagers and those in their 20s and even their early 30s‚ both male and female are getting into learning hip-hop dancing.
Hip-hop has its origins in urban African-American communities.
The culture has now spread to the mainstream‚ especially among youths.
Some of the popular moves include poppin' and lockin' which‚ like break dancing‚ follow the drum beats and bass lines of the music.
Poppin' and lockin' are robotic‚ or combined wave-like dance movements‚ added to steps in between each beat.
Sounds complicated.
Yes. It's easier to understand when you're actually watching the movements.
Now here's an instructor I met who says even senior citizens can master the dance.
"While it's true that most of the people interested in hip-hop dance are the youth and adults between the ages of 20 and 30‚ there are students in their 60s also learning the moves here and they're doing a great job."
"Hip-hop dance is gaining a lot of enthusiasm from the public. It's welcome almost everywhere by nearly everyone. While I'm a pretty good belly dancer‚ I also signed up for the hip-hop classes here."
And speaking of belly dancing‚ I hear this is also very popular?

Many experts say belly dancing is the oldest form of dance‚ having its roots in all ancient cultures from the Orient to India to the Mideast.
The greatest misconception about this form of bodily expression is that it is intended to entertain men.
Historical data show that belly dancing was usually performed for other women‚ generally during fertility rites‚ or parties preparing a young woman for marriage.
Now that is interesting.
Most of us would regard belly dancing as an exotic performance for men‚ I mean‚ considering the revealing attire‚ and sensuous moves.

But here in Korea‚ it has become a source of exercise for women who want to keep in shape.
Belly dancing is said to be natural to a woman's bone and muscle structure with movements coming from the torso rather than the legs and feet.
The dance often focuses on isolating different parts of the body‚ moving them independently in sensual patterns.
