Nearly 50 member states of the World Trade Organization have finalized a list of the latest IT products‚ such as touch-screen devices‚ GPS navigation devices‚ and new-generation semi-conductors‚ which they want to be made tariff-free.
This deal will add two-hundred-and-one products to the list of duty-free trade goods on the WTO's 18-year-old Information Technology Agreement.
With the updated deal‚.. around a quarter of the global technology product market‚.. worth some one.three trillion U.S. dollars‚ will be made tariff-free.
It would give the world economy a boost and consumers won't have to pay so much for the latest computers‚ game consoles and mobile devices.
However‚ for the deal to come into force in all 161 WTO member states‚ five more countries out of the 54 states that initially participated in the negotiations need to sign the agreement.
Taiwan‚ Turkey‚ Colombia‚ Mauritius and Thailand failed to ink the deal for various reasons‚ but they are expected to do so soon.
More talks on the deal will be held in December when WTO trade ministers meet in Nairobi.
The Korea-based Samsung Economic Research Institute has projected that‚ once the deal is implemented‚ Korean companies will be able to enjoy tens of billions of dollars in benefits from the tariff removals.
The think tank also forecasts global IT trade volume to increase by some eight-hundred billion U.S. dollars.
