And here in Seoul‚ the first Korea-Latin America Economic Cooperation Roundtable meeting was held on Tuesday.

Economic cooperation between Latin American countries and Korea have been growing with Korea's exports to Latin America rising by 25 percent per annum between 2006 and 2010 twice as fast as the growth of the country's total exports.

Ministry of Knowledge Economy] "Economic cooperation between Korea and Latin American nations has been growing rapidly. Rises in both trade between Korea and Latin America and Korea's investment in the region is leading to an improving labor market and strong economic growth."
The Korea-Chile free trade agreement‚ the first FTA between Asian and Latin American countries signed back in 2004‚ more than quadrupled Korea's trade volume with Chile.
And with Peru and Korea having signed a trade deal last month‚ the Peruvian ambassador to Korea was at the meeting to introduce investment opportunities for Korea companies in her country.
[Interview : Marcela Lopez-Bravo‚ Peruvian ambassador to Korea] "Peru right now offers a very good environment for investment. And also‚ the treatment that we offer to Korean investors is the same treatment we offer to the nationals in Peru‚ of course."
And aside from these two FTAs‚ Korea is in the process of establishing more trade deals with Latin American countries such as Colombia and Mexico.
In fact‚ the Korean government is seeing the free trade pacts as a tool to boost economic cooperation with the resource-rich region.

Samsung Economic Research Institute] "The second thing is‚ Korea and Latin America now trying to find FTA type of free trade agreements very strongly. We can find more cooperation through FTAs and in the future we can visualize FTA AP type of more comprehensive economic cooperation between the two countries."
And not only are more FTAs important in strengthening economic ties‚ experts say Korea should also support Latin America's economic development by carrying out collaborative projects to aid less-developed countries.
