A team led by Professor Choi Jung-woo of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology has developed a new stereoscopic technology called the “Sound Ball” system that allows virtual speakers to be placed anywhere.

With the “Sound Ball” system‚ multiple speakers can be consolidated into one “Sound Ball” device‚ because the virtual speaker can confine sound from several real speakers into one space and send that sound wherever you want.
For people who love the surround sound effect of home theater systems‚ this new technology offers a simple solution to having to install several large speakers all over the room.
This means you can get 3D surround sound by placing real speakers under a TV or near a stereo and by putting these Sound Balls in different places.
In 3D TVs‚ this stereoscopic technology can create the feeling of actually “being there‚” like hearing a sword whoosh right next to your ears or a bug buzzing around your head.

Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology] "If this technology is used in home theaters or cinemas then sounds can be reproduced like 3D TVs."
The technology is expected to go commercial as early as late next year.
