The ruling Saenuri Party launched its presidential primary management committee on Monday WITHOUT giving a clear reponse to some of its lawmakers' calls for an open primary.
The result -- threats of a split within the party.
The ruling party's so-called‚ non-Park lawmakers‚.. or those who don't support the party's former chair and leading presidential hopeful Park Geun-hye‚ have criticized the primary rules‚ which they say favor Park.
Lawmakers Chung Mong-joon‚ Lee Jae-oh and Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-soo and their supporters have been demanding a completely open primary‚ in which the general public‚ NOT just party delegates‚ get to choose the presidential nominee.
The lawmakers‚ who are also candidates in the primary‚ think that an open primary will give them a better chance of winning the race.
However‚ those backing Park are opposed to the idea‚ saying there's not enough time for the party to completely overhaul the primary system.

Meanwhile‚ former main opposition Democratic United Party leader Sohn Hak-kyu says that he will be announcing his presidential bid on Thursday‚ while lawmaker Moon Jae-in is likely to announce his bid on Sunday.
South Gyeongsang Province Governor Kim Doo-kwan is also expected to announce his bid soon with the support of a group of DUP lawmakers.
The party says it is planning to launch its own presidential primary management committee soon.
