This is Dodu port near Dodubong oreum.
Cruise ships and fishing boats move in and out of the port regularly.
Two barges‚ their hulls and rails heavily rusted‚ are anchored at the port.
Ropes litter the decks and the ships’ equipment is in bad shape.
Ten barges were purchased by the Jeju government in 2004 for about 1.3 billion won.
They were to be used for abalone farming.
Unfortunately‚ the business venture failed early on so the barges were simply abandoned.
[Interview : Local Resident] "The abalone aquafarming didn't work out because of the strong tides. The barges were never used. Some of them were taken away for scrap metal."
잘 안됐다. 조류가 세고 해서 못쓰게 됐다. 만들어서 사용 한 번도 못했다. 몇 대는 가져갔는데 고철이다.)
After eight years‚ the barges have rusted away and become floating wrecks.
In addition to being eyesores‚ they're causing inconveniences at the port.
[Interview : Local Resident] "The barges were built specifically for aquafarming but they weren’t used even once‚ and they’ve become just scrap metal. I hope they will be disposed of soon.
But getting the barges removed won't be easy.
Because the Jeju government couldn't afford to maintain them‚ it transferred ownership of the barges to a private corporation involved with the original aqua farm project last year.
As it stands‚ unless the company chooses to dispose of them‚ Dodu harbor will be their home for a long time to come.
