President Lee Myung-bak stated he believes that support for free education for all families with children under the age of five should be backed by the government even if it means cutting down other budgets.
During his first visit to a kindergarten in Seoul on Friday where he met with some teachers and students' parents President Lee expressed his wish to have the government support tuition for children aged 3 and 4‚ starting in 2013.
[Interview : President Lee Myung-bak] "I see education as an investment. So‚ my wish is to expand support for children aged 3 and 4‚ starting in 2013 before I leave office."
Starting next year the government is set to expand support for all five-year-olds in preschool by providing 200-thousand won‚ or roughly 177 US dollars every month to parents‚ regardless of their income.
Meanwhile‚ Lee also highlighted the fact that supporting childcare is not merely a matter of welfare but education and that such a move is one of the means of making an investment to resolve rapidly falling birthrate and an aging society.
His visit came ahead of the Education Ministry's the annual briefing on its policy goals which is slated for next Wednesday.
