The works of Shakespeare are still widely read today despite the fact that they were written half a millenium ago. One such work is the play "Twelfth Night."
This is "Twelfth Night‚" but with a twist: it is performed as a madang nori. It's a humorous fusion between Shakespeare and Korean tradition.
[Interview : Kim Sang-bo‚ Actor] "Even though it has been 400 to 500 years since Shakespeare's play "Twelfth Night" was first published‚ it still enjoys a wide popularity from generation to generation because the play connects with the audience‚ regardless of the place or race. The play adopted the basic plot from the original work. However‚ it featured a completely different presentation‚ focusing on the inherent beauty of the Korean culture.
[Interview : Yang Jeong-ung‚ Director] "We thought for a long time about how to present Shakespeare's lines in a way that could be easily understood by the Korea audience."

The wittiness of the actors keep the audience laughing throughout the performance.
There are no actresses in the performance‚ and some actors had to take up female roles. Their makeup‚ actions and even their high-pitched voices also had the audience bursting with laughter.
[Interview : Oh Min-seok‚ Actor] "If a woman was cast for my role‚ it would have been easier to express emotions onstage. Actions like getting close or holding hands would have been easier. However‚ as a man‚ I felt sorry for my fellow actors‚ and I also feel that I have become more demure because of my role."
Actors also appeared among the audience members‚ and even threw placards with lines written on them‚ involving them in the play as well.

"Twelfth Night" is a perfect madang nori performance‚ inviting the audience to play along.

I had to read the script. I couldn't read clearly because I was nervous‚ so I felt bad.
[Interview : Lee Eun-hwan‚ Audience member] "The music was exciting‚ and the actors used the entire stage. It was a good idea to involve the audience in the performance."
The madang nori adaptation of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" is filled with unbelievable twists‚ great stage action and exciting music. It will be a fulfilling experience for any audience member.

This is one of my favorite plays.
I'm so glad that it's been updated for a modern audience.
Not too familiar with Shakespeare.
But I think this play will appeal to people who never really have enjoyed Shakespeare before.
