Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk has received a patent for the stem cell line he derived a few years ago.
Back in 2006 the former Seoul National University professor and his team were accused of falsely claiming to have cloned cells using the pluripotent human embryonic stem cell line‚ NT-1.
However‚ according to the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation on Wednesday‚ Hwang recently received a Canadian patent‚ along with 14 other scientists for this stem cell line.
Canada is likely to be the only country to grant the patent as other countries such as Australia‚ China and Japan have rejected the patent application.
