요약정보
The United States has once again endorsed the use of the "Sea of Japan‚" and not "East Sea‚" when referring to the body of water which lies between Korea and Japan.
When asked about Washington's official stance on the designation‚ US State Department spokesperson Mark Toner said that the US stands by the internationally recognized term‚ Sea of Japan‚ and the US Board of Geographic Names determines the use of that term.
The long-time diplomatic feud between Korea and Japan over the name of the oceanic water was spotlighted this week amid reports that the US government submitted its position as requested by the International Hydrographic Organization.
While unofficially urging the US to equally apply both names‚ the Korean foreign ministry‚ unlike when handling Japan's ownership claims over the Korea-controlled Dokdo islets‚ took a softer stance‚ highlighting accomplishments made with 28 percent of world maps using both versions‚ or just East Sea‚ in 2009.
[Interview : Shin Maeng-ho‚ Deputy Spokesperson
Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade] "The marking of the Sea of Japan began in the late 18th century with the emergence of a modern map‚ which means Korea's campaign started about 100 years behind. There will be countries that only use Sea of Japan‚ but if we continue to go forward we will gain momentum and the time will come when we can represent our stance on using East Sea.
And ahead of next year's International Hydrographic Conference‚ a working group consisting of experts and government officials from 27 countries‚ including Korea and Japan‚ is studying the East Sea.
[Interview : Lee Ki-suk‚ Professor emeritus
Dept. of Geography Education‚ SNU] "Whatever the working group's decision may be‚ the member countries must unanimously agree on the decision and chances are low that the exclusive use of the name Sea of Japan will be passed."
Meanwhile‚ ruling Grand National Party Chairman Hong Jun-pyo emphasized the gravity of the East Sea issue to US Ambassador to Korea Kathleen Stephens on Tuesday‚ urging Washington to recognize both names for the body of water.
The main opposition Democratic Party‚ on the other hand‚ criticized the government's diplomacy‚ saying that it should mobilize all diplomatic capabilities to convince the US.
