As such‚ a new culture of sponsorship is rising in Korea. Let's take a look at crowd funding in the arts and culture world.
Hwatu [화투]‚ a game of Japanese origin‚ has been transformed with a Korean flair.
Graphic design students are the ones behind this unique idea.
[Interview : Kim Min-seon‚ Artist] "I play hwatu with my family frequently‚ and hwatu is originally a Japanese game. So I made hwatu cards based on Korean culture."
They replaced the Japanese art on hwatu with Korean lotuses and their artistic interpretations of Korean fables to come up with Korean hwatu.
[Interview : Park So-yeong‚ Artist] "The hwatu on my left hand is the original‚ and the one on the right is the new design I came up with. This motif represents unyielding spirit‚ and it was often seen in many Korean works."
As they are students with no income‚ their ideas came to life thanks to crowd funding.
[Interview : Park So-yeong‚ Artist] "Since we are students‚ we often have difficulties in participating in exhibitions. However‚ this exhibition allowed us to receive acknowledgement from many people‚ and we're happy that our ideas could come to life."
Last month‚ the Lee Won-kook [이원국] Ballet Company held a performance in Seoul Station with the help of crowd funding.

Arts Council Korea] "Crowd funding is a way for artists to introduce their ideas on the internet and allow the public to donate to them through different means."
Simply put‚ crowd funding is the idea of letting the public donate towards an art project within a set amount of time.

] "If the amount requested by an artist is reached within a given time period‚ the artist will receive the donation. If the amount is not reached‚ the donations are refunded."
When a project meets its donation goal‚ the artist invites his or her sponsors to the final exhibition or performance.
The Lee Won-kook Ballet Company recently gathered more than US$4‚700 through crowd funding.

] "I took part in crowd funding because I did not have enough money for ballet costumes. I was able to provide costumes to the main dancers with the donations I received."
With the donations‚ the Company acquired their fabulous stage costumes.
Thanks to their sponsors‚ the members of the company have been able to rehearse and perform every month.

] "People from all over Korea came to watch our performance‚ and I was happy because they enjoyed it and said that it helped them understand ballet better."

The indie Celtic band known as Bard had a performance for their sponsors.
