World famous palaces have always been held in high esteem - once as the residence of kings and queens‚ and now as important cultural sites and tourist attractions.
Each palace boasts its own country's tradition as well as unique gardens.
Korea also is home to palaces whose beauty rivals that of any Western palace. Gyeongbok Palace‚ Gyeonghui Palace‚ Deoksu [덕수] or Unhyeon Palace‚ Changgyeong Palace‚ and Changdeok Palace in Seoul exude artistic beauty with every year that passes.

Changdeok Palace was known as East Palace along with Changgyeong Palace because it was located to the east of Gyeongbok Palace‚ the main palace. Old Korean palaces are notable for their principle of never harming nature‚ but lightly building a palace on top of the existing scenery. Changdeok Palace is no exception‚ harmonizing perfectly with its natural surroundings.

The trademark of Changdeok Palace is the Huwon‚ or rear garden. It is also known as "secret garden" because access was strictly limited. The garden‚ pond‚ and gazebo were all made without harming the original scenery.
