It's been a while since Korea was indicated to have one of the highest divorce rates in the entire world.And although Korea boasted to be one of the fast-growing contries rapid social changes inevitably resulted in changes within people's minds.
having almost one divorce in every 2 marriages.
Considering how Korea has always been deeply attached to Confucian values of family and patriarchy. soaring divorce rates have proved that Korea was in the midst of social transformation. And Arirang Today's producer Park Hee-ju joins us in the studio to tell us that Korea is finally seeing a decrease in its divorce rate just in 13 years.. Hello there.
[Reporter : ] Hello.
So Hee-ju This is good news divorce rate dropped in 13 years[Reporter : ] Well‚ in fact it's not the first drop in 13 years Korea's divorce rate has always been quite rocky.. Ever since the currency crisis back in 1997‚ Korea's divorce rate skyrocketed till 2005 and then saw a small decrease but it never showed any signs to drop below 1997 levels. However‚ recent statistics show that the divorce rate finally fell below pre-1997 levelsshedding a new light on Korean society.
If drastic social transformation resulted in high divorce rate.. does this mean there was another change that affected this result

[Interview : ] "Are you out of your mind[Interview : ] "Marriage isn't the only chance for change. Divorce is another chance!"

[Interview : ] "Not everyone will meet their perfect soul mate. Couples should try to understand each other and give each other another chance."

] "A stronger economy and the divorce consideration period measure has decreased the number of spontaneous divorces. The decline in divorce among the younger generation can be attributed to a growing sense of gender equality among men."

[Interview : ] "It's not that I hate my husband‚ but financial difficulties lead to a lot of fighting."
I think there's no solution if the problem is a financial one. It might be better just to get a divorce.

] "In the past‚ people used to push back divorce and resolve financial issues first‚ but financial difficulties reached extremes and the number of divorces increased. Economic recovery is probably responsible for some of the decline in divorce rates."

[Interview : ] "Sure‚ kill me. What kind of wife wants to kill her husband[Interview : ] "Most couples fight because of the same things. Family issues‚ financial problems or parenting issues."
[Interview : ] "We fight over how to educate our kids."
[Interview : ] "People these days are more individualistic‚ so they don't have enough consideration for their spouses."
[Interview : ] "No one feels the need to hold back their emotions anymore."
So Hee-ju.. you cited economic instability and irreconcilable differences in personalities as the main causes of divorce in Korea which I think.. apply for everyone in other countries as well. but there must be something more specific about cases in Korea.
[Reporter : ] Well‚ irreconcilable differences in personality.. that encompasses every conflict that two people can have but in Korea as one of the interviewees mentioned that there's also a growing sense of gender equality among men which mainly contributed to a decrease in divorce rate a patriarchal society combined with the nation's industrialization and westernization caused more conflicts among married couples And some of the married people I interviewed all said how in order to avoid arguments men always have to give in. that solves everything
