According to a survey released by the US military on Thursday‚ the chemical compound dioxin has been found in soil and groundwater at its Camp Carroll located in southeastern Korea.
The survey taken in 2004 by Samsung C&T Corporation found that in two different areas of the camp‚ the soil contained 1.7 and point-7-5 parts-per-trillion of dioxin‚ respectively.
The groundwater of those two areas‚ meanwhile‚ contained about 3.4 and point-97 parts-per-quadrillion.
However‚ according to standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency‚ those levels are far too low to affect human health.
In the late 1970's‚ the US military prepared to remove dioxin and other toxic chemicals it had stored at Camp Carroll‚ but it's unclear if those plans were ever carried out.
