The Presidential Office says the latest agreement between the prosecution and police holds that secret probes by police should be conducted the way they have been.
A high-ranking presidential official told Yonhap News today that secret investigations carried out before police officially register a case are a customary practice rather than a legal term‚ and that prosecutors and police need to maintain the status quo with these probes.
The official went on to say police should not expand the scope of cases that have been covered with these secret probes and that prosecutors should not try to exercise more supervisory powers.
Such comments came after some police officers demanded the police commissioner to step down claiming that the latest revision virtually gives the prosecution more supervisory rights referring to the most controversial point in the revision that states police should follow prosecutors' orders in all investigations.
