The 192-nation U.N. General Assembly unanimously approved a second five-year term for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the UN headquarters Tuesday afternoon‚ local time a great personal honor as well as a moment of pride for his fellow Koreans.
[Interview : Joseph Deiss‚ UN General Assembly President] "It is so decided and I have the honor of proclaiming his Excellency Mr. Ban Ki-moon appointed by acclamation the Secretary-General of the United Nations for a second term of office beginning on the 1st January 2012 and ending on the 31st December 2016."
After giving the Oath of Office in the Assembly Hall Ban addressed the delegates humbly‚ thanking them for allowing him to continue to follow the footsteps of former UN chiefs.
"With your decision this afternoon‚ with warm words‚ you do to me a very great honor beyond expression. Standing in this place‚ mindful of the immense legacy of my predecessors‚ I'm humbled by your trust and enlarged by our sense of common purpose."
Last Friday the five permanent members of the Security Council unanimously backed the former Korean Foreign Minister by an acclamation giving their concrete support for Ban before his official confirmation at the General Assembly on Tuesday.
At 67-years-oldBan is a hard-working and modest diplomat who has even gracefully embraced those who said he was a " powerless observer" that lacked charisma.
However‚ Ban.. has won praise for his commitment to tackling climate change‚ nuclear disarmament and women's issues‚ for his backing of the pro-democracy movements in North Africa and the Middle East‚ and for military intervention in Ivory Coast and Libya.
During his new term‚ Ban has pledged to broaden agendas on climate change‚ sustainable development‚ human rights and nuclear disarmament.
