Usually a lack of harvest is bad news but it's turning out to be just the opposite.
This year's harvest of Jeju tangerines is estimated to reach up to 648-thousand tons.
This is nearly 70-thousand tons more than the average level and an about face from the situation last year.
In 2010‚ the unseasonably cold spring weather damaged the fruit cultivation and just 480-thousand tons were good for sale.
When this happens‚ farmers say the following year typically turns out to be a bumper crop.
But they are not happy with the glut in output as this would mean a price plunge is likely for the crops of their labor.
They say this is usually the case and they are bracing themselves for the burden of settling the cost of labor.
In order to meet the appropriate output level in the coming years‚ Jeju authorities have decided to encourage off year farming and try to raise the quality of the prized tangerines of the island.
Jeju is expected to release its second output estimate for the year in August.
