A new candidate for the top post at the International Monetary Fund has appeared to challenge the frontrunner Christine Lagarde of France.
Bank of Israel Governor‚ Stanley Fischer announced his candidacy to be the head of the IMF on Saturday‚ saying his strong background in economics will help him contribute to the recovery of the global economy.
The 67-year-old Fischer served as the first deputy managing director of the IMF from 1994 to 2001 and holds dual citizenship in Israel and the United States.
Fischer's candidacy poses a problem for the IMF‚ as it is bound by rules to limit the age of new managing directors to be no more than 65 years old.
Currently‚ the retirement age is set at 70.
