North Korea's 1-million troops‚ ballistic missile program‚ and nuclear enrichment activities are a "growing and direct threat" to the United States.
This is what Central Intelligence Agency Director Leon Panetta‚ who is also the US Defense Secretary nominee‚ told the Senate Armed Service Committee on Wednesday in Washington.
Prior to his testimony before the panel on Thursday‚ Panetta said if he is confirmed as the next US defense chief he will closely monitor the security situation in North Korea and maintain the capabilities necessary to protect American interests‚ defend its allies‚ and deter the regime from provocative acts.
He said Washington must continue to monitor the North's weapons of mass destruction and missile development‚ and promised to work closely with the nation's allies as defense secretary.
Panetta also promised to support qualitative and quantitative improvements in the US missile defense program to protect the country against potential intercontinental ballistic missile attacks from North Korea and Iran.
The Obama administration nominated Panetta last month to succeed US Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
Unlike Gates‚ Panetta is a former Democratic congressman from California and not a career intelligence officer.
