요약정보
Arts education offers an ideal setting for people to put their creativity to work.
However‚ students are often fed on what they should think and that sometimes makes them lose the ability to simply trust their instincts.
So to assure a better future for art education‚ a special event was launched on Monday under the name of "Arts Education Week 2011."
[Interview : Chung Byoung-gug‚ Minister
Ministry of Culture‚ Tourism & Sports] "I believe great artworks unite people of different countries‚ languages‚ race‚ religions and ideologies. When people look at them‚ they understand the artist's thoughts and become one with the artist. I also believe that pieces of art unite society as a whole."
The Seoul Agenda was adopted during the UNESCO World Conference on Arts Education last year for all 193 UNESCO member states to use as an educational guideline.
The agenda says that education in culture and arts must be improved by helping educators maintain top quality arts education‚ as well as by providing a variety of programs for students.
[Interview : James Powderly‚ Artist
US] "Sometimes we fall into a standardized achievement test mentality and that works for some students‚ but it doesn't work for every student. Some people need a more creative outlet. These creative projects give them a chance to a more wholistic approach to learning."
Fun events were also set up at the venue for people of all ages to enjoy.
Some got to light up their hand-drawn pictures using circuits and miniature light bulbs‚ while others got to build a giant pyramid by using only bamboo sticks and rubber bands.
[Interview : Choi Moon-chang‚ Participant
2011 Arts Education Week] "We're learning to cooperate with one another to build this giant pyramid. Each team makes smaller pyramids‚ then we come together to connect them all together. This is a good way to learn and physically experience arts education."
Many artists on this day said that arts education is vital‚ valued‚ and certainly not an afterthought as the need for reform and new ideas never stops.
[Reporter : Lee Ji-yoon‚ jiyoonjlee@arirang.co.kr] "This entire week will be filled with various cultural and arts events with the hopes of drawing more attention to the value of arts education worldwide.
