The South Korean National Assembly passed a controversial bill which puts a midnight curfew on underage gamers.
The shutdown system which is also known as the 'Cinderella Law' prohibits children under the age of 16 from playing online games after midnight.
Although the bill was aimed at tackling game addiction among teenagers it has brought about endless controversies.
And to tell us more on this Arirang Today's reporter Kim Hyo-sun joins us today in the studio.

[Reporter : ] Surveys on children show that video games topped the list this year proving the popularity of games.
There has been an increasing number of crimes related to teenagers addicted to online games and the Korean government thought it was best to put a midnight curfew on underage gamers specifically those under 16.
Yet many opponents of this shutdown system including those in the gaming industry are questioning the effectiveness of the ban.
Let's take a look at the details of what the shutdown system is.
Children laughing and running around outdoors have long become a memory of more innocent times in Korea.
Today children are often glued in front of computers at dark and stuffy internet cafes or they lock themselves in their rooms playing computer games.
And in recent years the phenomenon of online game addiction among teenagers and the resulting crime incidents have become a profound social problem here in the nation.
As online game addiction can blur the line between reality and the virtual world especially for teenagers many commit crimes as serious as murder.
Data released by the National Information Society Agency show that more than one million teenagers here in Korea show signs of game addiction.
In 2010 over 1-hundred-thousand of them have received consulting which is a 32-fold increase from 2007.
Experts say that the biggest problem with game addiction is that it is hard to cure… just like drug addiction or gambling.
Hoping to tackle game addiction among underage gamers the National Assembly passed a controversial bill on April 29th.
The shutdown system which bans those under the age of 16 from playing online games after midnight is also known as the 'Cinderella Law.'
Once the new bill goes into effect in November underage gamers will have no access to online games from midnight to six a.m.
[Interview : ] "Cases of crime and suicide among game addicted teenagers have become common. The social backlash is too big to just blame their parents.""
Parents who are worried about the negative effects that games can have on their children also welcome the bill.
[Interview : ] "Online games have led children to get addicted and have created other social problems. One of the biggest concerns was children's deprivation of sleep. So‚ this system bans children from accessing networking games from midnight to 6 a.m. This is not a bill going against the gaming industry‚ but a system to grant sleeping time for youngsters."
아이들이 인터넷 게임으로 인해서 중독도 걸리고‚ 사회적으로 문제도 많았구요. 특히 잠을 못자서 여러가지 문제들이 생겨서 밤 12시부터 새벽 6시까지 적어도 네트워크 게임‚ 다인이 접속하는 네트워크 게임에 접속을 제한하는 제도입니다.
이것은 게임산업이나‚ 청소년들을 제한하는 제도가 아니라 아이들에게 잠좀 자자는 생명권과 건강권을 보장하기 위한 그런 제도입니다.
[Reporter : ] "Although video game addiction among teenagers has been a serious concern here in the nation many still doubt whether the so-called shutdown system can effectively tackle the problem."
Once the bill was passed as a revision to the Youth Protection Act it brought about severe backlash from the gaming industry and a number of civic organizations.
Industry insiders say while the curfew will not bring an immediate impact on the revenues of game publishers it will definitely harm the image of these companies in the local and overseas market taking into account the increasing exports of Korea's g
