Toyota will voluntarily recall around 308‚000 sports utility vehicles sold in the United States due to defective airbag sensors‚ which can cause the airbags to deploy unnecessarily.
The Japanese automaker says that the recall affects about 214-thousand RAV4s and 94-thousand Highlander SUVs sold in Americabetween 2007 and 2008.
Toyota says.. that if two sensors in the vehicles' roll-sensing airbag system fail simultaneously those airbags designed to protect occupants in a rollover crash could inflate even if the vehicle has not actually rolled over.
The company acknowledges that some minor injuries related to the defect have been reported but Toyota stresses that the recall will only affect those vehicles sold in the United States.
