Due to fears that the wave of pro-democracy movements in Egypt‚ Libya and other parts of the Arab world could spread to North Korea Pyeongyang is cracking down on IT devices such as computers and cell phones.
A South Korean government source said Friday that the North has been recording the number of PCs in offices and homes since the beginning of this year.
Portable storage devices such as USBs and MP3 players are also on the list.
According to the source‚ North Korean citizens caught using an unregistered device can face criminal charges.
However‚ even people who do register their belongings‚ have had a number of their gadgets confiscated.
Currently there are known to be over 400-thousand registered cell phones in North Korea.
In order to own a cell phone‚ however‚ North Koreans must get approval from the government.
And any cell phone devices bought outside the country are strictly prohibited.
Pyeongyang also asks foreigners working in international NGOs in the North to abide by this rule.
The Internet is not available unless you are a high ranking official with close ties with the Kim Jong-il regime.
The North has reportedly been closely monitoring Internet activity by North Korean diplomats and officials overseas citing ideological corruption as the main reason.
