요약정보
On Tuesday‚ a special symposium to review and discuss the aftermath of the attack on the South Korean Navy corvette‚ the Cheonan‚ was held in Seoul.
The vice minister of national defense opened the session with a key note speech that stressed the importance of a new fighting force that Seoul will field in the coming days to maintain a robust deterrence against Pyeongyang.
[Interview : Lee Young-geol‚ Vice Minister
Ministry of National Defense] "To never permit the North to repeat its unprovoked attacks‚ our military will be transformed into a combat-ready fighting force in accordance with the 3-0-7 defense reform plan."
National security researchers and policy makers present at the symposium first reviewed the problems that were revealed in the aftermath of the incident‚ especially in terms of operational control and preparation for limited conflicts.
[Interview : Park Chang-kwon‚ Senior Researcher
Korea Institute for Defense Analyses
] "There are many effective plans to prevent limited conflicts by the North‚ but many have not yet been implemented. Executing these plans is very important.
And for enhanced joint operational capability‚ it must be done in consideration of weapon systems as well as the special character of each service branch."
With regard to inter-Korean relations‚ the policy experts said failing to respond in strength to Pyeongyang's limited conflicts in the past resulted in the attacks on the Cheonan and Yeonpyeong Island last year‚ making it imperative that now‚ Seoul not only show its resolve but also actually strike back.
A memorial altar has been set-up in the middle of Seoul for the 46 sailors and Warrant Officer Han Jun-ho‚ who died during rescue operations.
As people stop for a moment to pay their respects to the ones who gave their lives for the protection of freedom and democracy‚ they are reminded that the national security issue is not just for officials and researchers‚ but also for ordinary South Koreans on the street.
[Reporter : Kang Seok-ho
kangsh@arirang.co.kr] "To turn the tragic loss of 46 lives into a worthy sacrifice for the country‚ as national security experts agreed‚ Seoul must learn from its lessons in 2010 and continue to reform its defense posture against the North.
