The average gas price in Korea hovered around 2-thousand won‚ or 1 dollar and 80 US cents‚ per liter on Friday.
And soaring fuel prices are driving people to choose self-service gas stations to save money.
This self-service gas station in Seoul sells regular gasoline at 120 won‚ or about 10 cents cheaper than its neighboring stations.
This may sound like a small amount‚ but as the old American saying goes "every penny counts."
[Interview : Kim Tae-gyun‚ Seoul resident] "Self-service stations are cheaper‚ so that is the only reason. It is the price‚ since gas is so expensive these days."
This self-service gas station in Seoul has been in business for the past two years and the retail manager says they are seeing a steady increase in sales.
[Interview : Kim Young-ki‚ Gas station manager] "People are more receptive to self-serve stations these days and we also offer a variety of other services. With the rise in fuel prices‚ our customers are on the rise as well."
While 80 to 90 percent of gas stations in North America and Europe have the option of self-serve industry experts here say it is only around 30 percent in Korea.
But more gas companies are planning to increase the number of self-service stations as it is quickly gaining popularity due to its competitive pricing.
