In a widely expected move the European Central Bank kept its benchmark interest rate steady at a record low of 1 percent for the 22nd straight month on Thursday.
However‚ speaking to reporters following the policy meeting in Frankfurt European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet‚ shocked markets by saying that interest rates could be raised as soon as the next policy meeting in April to fight inflation across the 17-nation eurozone.
The ECB chief's warning comes as a surprise as April is far earlier than the end-of-year raise that many had expected.
The ECB has lowered its key interest rate by 3-and-a-quarter percentage points through seven rate cuts since the global financial crisis broke out in October 2008.
