The Korean warship Choi Young‚ which entered port at the Libyan capital of Tripoli Thursday evening‚ Korea time has departed for Malta with 32 Korean nationals on board.
With room for one hundred people in addition to its crew of 300‚ the destroyer arrived in Tripoli on Wednesday having come from waters near Somalia where it had been fighting piracy.
Seoul's defense ministry said the South Korean warship is expected to arrive at Malta's Port Valletta at around 2 p.m.‚ Korea time.
After bringing the 32 Koreans to safety‚ the destroyer Choi Young will stand by in nearby waters in the Mediterranean to further assist in evacuating the Korean people from Libya.
The Korean government has also leased two ships from Greece which will stop by several Libyan ports to pick up some 3‚500 workers‚ including 253 Koreans‚ and let them off at the Greek port of Piraeus on Sunday.
