요약정보
This is the House of Sharing in Gyeonggi Province‚ a home and a place of healing for nine of the surviving "comfort women".
The term "comfort women" is a euphemism for girls and women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II.
The remaining victims and several other organizations hold demonstrations every Wednesday in front of the Japanese embassy‚ with this week's marking the 959th.
[Reporter : Oh Jee-hyun
jhoh@arirang.co.kr] "One of the victims died last month of old age‚ and now only 75 women are left. And as you can see not many can call for much longer for the Japanese government to take appropriate actions."
The demonstrations have been ongoing for almost 20 years‚ but the Japanese government has yet to make an official apology or offer proper compensation.
[Interview : Lee Ok-sun‚ Former comfort woman] "There aren't many of us left‚ so all we want is an official apology from Japan and legal compensation before we die."
Meanwhile‚ the Korean Council is demanding Japan take further actions calling for those responsible for the crime to be punished and for distorted facts to be corrected in Japanese history textbooks.
[Interview : Kim Dong-hee‚ Secretariat
The Korean Council] "Last year 1.2 million Japanese and 500-thousand Koreans signed a petition‚ demanding the Japanese government take legal responsibility for comfort women. This year‚ we're working with Japanese citizens‚ organizations and members of the cabinet to achieve our goals."
When the comfort women were first brought into the public spotlight in 1991‚ there were more than 200 of them in Korea‚ but these aged victims are being neglected and the history forgotten as years have passed with the issue still unresolved.
