North Korea is continuing to strengthen its military despite news of a severe food shortage there.
Seoul's Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin told lawmakers Wednesday that Pyeongyang has been observed increasing its military strength as South Korea and US conduct joint military drills.
Kim added that the communist regime has been conducting its regular winter military training since December first and has deployed new weapon systems including tanks‚ submarines and torpedos.
Minister Kim also said the South Korean troops are closely watching the North for a possible nuclear test.
