While some conservative politicians here in Korea have advocated the redeployment of US tactical nuclear weapons in light of Pyeongyang's aggressions government officials said Monday that the South has NO such plans.
A senior official at the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae said South Korea still abides by a 1991 denuclearization agreement in response to reports that the US would be open should Seoul request to nuclearize the South.
These reports were based on comments by Gary Samore‚ the White House coordinator for arms control and weapons of mass destruction who said this stance was his personal opinion.
All US tactical nuclear weapons were removed from the South in 1991.
But experts say the South has plenty of protection from US nuclear capabilities in submarines and nearby bases overseas.
