요약정보
On March 1st‚ 1919‚ the words "long live Korea" could be heard in every corner of the country.
[Interview : Bang Ji-il ‚ Survivor of March 1st Movement ] "When you press on something with too much force‚ it can suddenly jump at you. The same thing happened back then: the Japanese were too oppressive and made the Korean people rise up against them. I'm quite sure that every single Korean cried the word "Manse!" that day."
The March 1st Movement united all Koreans regardless of social class and religion. Let's hear to some of the survivors retell this historical incident.
In Jongno-gu‚ Seoul‚ lives Gu Ik-gyun ‚ who is Korea's oldest person of merit for the Korean independence. Also known as the former executive secretary of An Chang-ho‚ he is currently 103 years old. Despite his old age‚ however‚ his memories of the March 1st Movement remains crystal clear.
[Interview : Gu Ik-gyun‚ Survivor of March 1st Movement] "I was only 11 years old when the March 1st Movement took place. But I too joined the others and shouted "manse" everywhere. The Japanese military police attacked and harassed those who were cheering like that."
Under the Japanese rule‚ Koreans were banned from participating in media activities‚ and their access to education was taken away as well. Due to Japan's economic exploitations‚ many became peasant folks and farmers. So it was only natural that anti-Japanese sentiment grew among people.
[Interview : Yoon Kyung-ro‚ Professor of Korean History and Culture
Hansung University] "In November of 1905‚ Japan forced Korea into signing the Eulsa Treaty and took away the latter's diplomatic rights. It also disbanded the Korean army. This turned Korea into one of Japan's regions in the eyes of the foreigners‚ and with the introduction of the so-called military police system‚ Korea virtually became a prison without bars. Such tyranny naturally bred a lot of discontent among Koreans‚ and in
the end caused a huge revolt - that is‚ the March 1st Movement."
92 years ago today‚ a large crowd gathered at Tapgol Park in Seoul. And waving their flags‚ they began to cheer for Korea's independence. This epidemic movement drew 2.2 million participants nationwide.
Mr. Gu‚ who was 11 at that time‚ still remembers the day.
[Interview : Gu Ik-gyun‚ Survivor of March 1st Movement] "This was where Korea's independence was declared. A total of 33 people were responsible for drawing up the Declaration of Independence."
The 33 representatives who wrote the declaration of independence were all men of religion. At the time when all activities were banned except for religious ones‚ they were the only people who could orchestrate such a movement.
[Interview : Yoon Kyung-ro‚ Professor of Korean History and Culture
Hansung University ] "The independence fighters chose a peaceful method of getting their message across: namely‚ that they were determined to bring about Korea's independence‚ that they would not resort to violence but instead achieve their goals through demonstrations‚ and that they would recover Korea's national sovereignty through legitimate means with the help of Japan and other powerful nations. So in other words‚ the March 1st Movement was a nonviolent resistance against
the Japanese rule."
The March 1st Movement was a nonviolent demonstration. However‚ Japan took strong measures to crush the uprising. Among the participants‚ 5‚700 were killed and 47 thousand imprisoned.
Also‚ 700 houses and 50 churches were burned and destroyed. Despite such suppression‚ however‚ the movement continued for over two months.
[Interview : Bang Ji-il‚ Survivor of March 1st Movement] "Policemen stood waiting inside and outside the door. They let people go out one by one‚ trying to catch those who
