This week‚ I have prepared a feature on Bangladesh‚
a country that gained its independence in 1971‚
and has a history similar to that of Korea.
It is the sacrifice of martyrs of this country who died defending
their language‚ Bengali‚ which gave birth to
International Mother Language Day.
Find out how this special day came to be about‚
and what significance it holds.
There are over 6‚000 languages in use all over the world today‚ but half of those languages are on the verge of extinction.
The International Mother Language Day seeks to protect these endangered languages.
Every year since 1999‚ UNESCO has commemorated the International Mother Language Day on February 21st to emphasize the importance of mother languages in the preservation of the world's language diversity and their idiosyncratic cultural identities.
If languages do not exist‚ cultures disappear.
The movement to preserve native languages is global.

Korean National Commission for UNESCO] "These days‚ UNESCO is very concerned with language diversity and ICT. We want to improve language diversity through ICT. That is‚ to use social networks to increase the importance of language diversity."
This is the Embassy of Bangladesh located in Yongsan-gu‚ Seoul.
The ambassador raised the flah to commemorate International Mother Language day‚ also a public holiday in Bangladesh. Many Bangladeshi residents and students‚ along with Koreans‚ were here to witness this event.

West Pakistan outlawed East Pakistan threatening Bengali‚ the mother language of East Pakistanis. East Pakistani university students led protests to bring back their language‚ and a violent movement began.

Embassy of The People's Republic of Bangladesh‚ Seoul] "The International Mother Language Day has special significance for Bangladeshi people because it originated from Bangladesh. No other Asian country is known to have made so much sacrifice as we have to protect and preserve our mother language."
Their efforts were not in vain. Bengali was recognized as the second official language of Pakistan in 1956‚ and the movement is memorialized each year in Bangladesh to this day.
