We begin with the annual joint drills between the South Korean and US forces
The military defense drills. code-named Key Resolve and Foal Eagle kicked off on the south of the Korean peninsula earlier this morning.
The Key Resolve drill‚ which is a command-post exercise using computer-based simulations‚ will be conducted for 11 days from February 28th to March 10th while Foal Eagle‚ which focuses on field exercises‚ will be held through April 30th with about 200-thousand South Korean troops and over 12-thousand US soldiers taking part.
This year's exercises are different to previous ones as the two allies are expected to focus on defending against small‚ sudden attacks‚ similar to the ones North Korea carried out on the Cheonan warship and Yeonpyeong Island last year.
Although details have not been announced a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier may also take part in the drill.
The drills will also focus on training troops to search for and destroy North Korean weapons of mass destruction.
Meanwhile‚ on Sunday North Korea reiterated its threat ….saying that their armed forces would launch "an all-out war of unprecedented scale" and turn Seoul into "a sea of fire" if the South Korean and the US "invaders" provoked Pyongyang with a threat of war.
However‚ the Combined Forces Command say that the exercise was pre-planned and purely defensive in nature and the drills are not connected to any current world events..
The South Korean military says it has raised its defense posture and it will keep a close eye on any unusual activity in the North.
