Korean check card franchisees will pay lower fees from next month.
Industry sources say that the average fee imposed on check card franchisees will drop from 1.87 percent in the first half of 2010 to below 1.5 percent from March.
The fee reduction could potentially save the franchisees more than 200 billion won‚ or 177 million US dollars every year.
Although check cards have not been as popular in Korea as they are in other countries‚ the card industry expects that the fee reduction will make check cards more appealing to Korean consumers.
Furthermore‚ the tax deduction rate for check cards is 25 percent‚ while the rate for credit cards is 20 percent.
