Thank you for staying with us.
An annual joint military defense drills called Key Resolve and Foul Eagle involving the armed forces of South Korea and the United States kicked off on the south of the Korean peninsula starting today.
The annual exercises are aimed at defending South Korea from potential North Korean aggression just like last year's attacks that killed 50 South Koreans.
And to tell us more about these drills our national defense correspondent Kim Na-ri is here with us in the studio.
Welcome‚ Na-ri.
[Reporter : ] Hello.
So first of all‚ please explain to us about the annual exercises.
1.
[Reporter : ] Sure‚ this time of the year the combined troops of South Korea and the United States conduct the military exercises called Key Resolve and Foal Eagle across Korea.
The joint troops of the two allies started their training today‚ that is Monday here in Seoul with the primary goal to to ensure the command is ready to defend South Korea in the event it becomes necessary.
This year's exercises are different to the ones before as they are focused on improving two allies' ability to deter North Korean aggression following the North's attacks last year.
The Key Resolve which is a command-post drill using computer-based simulations will be conducted for 11 days from February 28th to March 10th while the Foal Eagle training‚ which focuses on field exercises‚ also begin today‚ but will be carried out until April 30th with about 200-thousand South Korean troops and nearly 13-thousand US soldiers.
According to the Combined Forces Command here earlier Seoul and Washington have informed Pyongyang of their plan to hold the annual exercise in advance.
Well‚ you have mentioned that this year's exercise is different to the previous ones as South Korea experienced North Korea's attacks last year.
2.
[Reporter : ] Right‚ this year's exercise is expected to focus more than in previous years on defending against small‚ sudden attacks like North Korea's on a South Korean warship Cheonan last March and Yeonpyeong Island in November.
Although details have not been announced a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier may also take part in the drill and the joint training will also be focused on the search and destroy of North Korean weapons of mass destruction.
Now‚ we still need confirmation on these information by the military officials though.
Right‚ and also this year's exercise will also be focused on abrupt changes that could happen in the communist regime[Reporter : ] Right.
The North is showing signs of internal turmoil that could indicate instabilitywith a succession plan that seems to be underway and recent news of severe food shortages in the impoverished nation.
And as I have mentioned before‚ along with North Korea two deadly attacks on the South in the past 11 month the communist regime also revealed a uranium enrichment facility that shows its nuclear program may be more advanced than previously thought.
So‚ noting the North's such fragile situation the two allies during the drill are also expected to prepare for all possible scenarios‚ including all-out war.
North Korea‚ of course‚ has not been happy with the annual joint drill and just yesterday the North has heavily criticized the exercise calling it a rehearsal for nuclear war and threatened to attack the South.
4.
[Reporter : ] Right‚ on Sunday‚ North Korean representatives at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjeom‚ reiterated their usual threat against the annual Key Resolve military drills saying that their armed forces would launch "an all-out war of unprecedented scale" and turn Seoul into "a sea of fire" if the South Korean and the US "invaders" provoked Pyongyang with a threat of war.
And we have to note that the North's torpedo attack on the South Korean warship Cheonan happened during the Foal Eagle exercise this time o
