요약정보
Violent anti-government demonstrations have swept across Egypt causing the North African country's major trading partners to obviously be concerned.
"Since the violent demonstrations started on January 28th‚ all police forces have pulled out‚ causing a loophole in public security. And some working class people have turned into rioters‚ blocking roads and looting downtown. Places like jails‚ where all the guards have left has led to prisoners escaping. The situation is extremely chaotic here."
Korea is worried that prolonged geopolitical instability in Egypt could hurt its trade and investment in the region.
Korea is Egypt's fourth-largest trading partner with trade volume between the two countries estimated at more than 2.2 billion US dollars annually.
The Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency‚ or KOTRA‚ says that there are about 1‚650 Korean firms that export to Egypt.
And most Korean businesses in the country are taking a similar approach by evacuating their staff amid the growing unrest.
"There are a total of 36 Korean firms which have set up shop in Egypt. But as the riots continue on‚ workers are staying home and monitoring the situation. Most of their family members are either evacuating to nearby countries or returning to Korea."
The Hyundai Motor Company has already evacuated their Korean workers to Dubai‚ while both Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have decided to send their Korean employees back home.
Assembly lines of Korean companies in Egypt have mostly come to a complete halt due to a lack of local workers..
KOTRA has advised Korean businesses to seek alternative ways to keep in close contact with Egyptian buyers as social networks such as Twitter‚ Facebook and other websites have experienced problems in the past few days.
And the agency also says that if the protests continue to rage on Korean firms should seek alternative markets away from now unstable Egypt.
