Hwang Byung-ki‚ who first encountered the gayageum during the Korean War evacuations in 1951‚ fell in love with the instrument's sound and began learning about it from the late masters Kim Yeong-yun and Kim Yun-deok.
He soon became known in the musical world as a gugak genius. He became a professor at Ewha Women's University in 1974. Since 2006‚ he has been active as the artistic director of the National Orchestra of Korea.
[Interview : ] "When I think about it now‚ I believe that gayageum is my true destiny. The sound is so beautiful‚ in a Korean way. It has flavor. It's very attractive. I didn't realize it at first‚ but the more I hear the music‚ the more I can feel that this is truly the sound of Korea."
Hwang Byung-ki is evaluated by many as a gugak artist who transcended the simple imitation of tradition to help create new gugak.

In 1962‚ when gugak composition was a challenge rarely met by musicians‚ Hwang debuted a piece called “The Forest‚" the first modern piece written for gayageum.
