Korea introduced a tracking system for imported beef on Wednesday in an effort to protect consumer rights and provide safe beef products in the domestic market.
The agriculture ministry announced that the system‚ called MeatWatch‚ will require barcode-based identification labels to be attached to the packages of all imported beef.
Any beef product without the identification labels will be barred from distribution.
Under the measure‚ distributors and vendors‚ as well as importers must register with the tracking system to allow consumers to be notified of relevant information about their purchase including the country of origin‚ packing date‚ shelf life and the names of the beef processors.
