As South Korea prepares to hold live-ammunition artillery firing exercises on Yeonpyeong Island‚ China and Russia are showing signs of cooperation in effort to stop Seoul.
Although the exercise is to take place within the sovereign territory of South Korea‚ the top diplomats from the two countries held a teleconference on Saturday and agreed to work together in dealing with the situation.
According to China's foreign ministry Minister Yang Jiechi told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that the two Koreas should show restraint and that Seoul and Pyeongyang should not act in a way that will escalate the heightened military tension.
Meanwhile New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson‚ who has been in Pyeongyang since last Thursday‚ said he met with North Korea's top nuclear negotiator Kim Gye-gwan and offered a number of recommendations to alleviate the pressure between the two Koreas.
The New York Times reported on Saturday that Richardson recommended the establishment of a military hotline between Seoul and Pyeongyang‚ as well as a commission to monitor areas of dispute‚ which will include the United States as a member.
Over in Seoul‚ a high-ranking official from the Presidential Office said on Sunday that China and Russia's opposition to the firing exercise has no effect on South Korea's plans.
And the official added that any apprehension about North Korea's threats disturbing peace in the region is the result of manipulation by Pyeongyang.
