President Lee Myung-bak held a briefing session with the Ministry of Education‚ Science and Technology on key policy plans for 2011 on this Friday.
The government body pledged to focus its goals on implementing a forward-looking educational system and promoting advanced science technology.
The ministry proposed selecting 20 outstanding local universities and fostering them into world class institutions‚ while pushing to get three of Korea's prestigious universities included on the list of the world's top 30 universities by 2015.
It will also pursue the establishment of the International Science Business Belt aimed at boosting economic development by attracting and nurturing high-tech companies and expand investment in the country's R&D sector through a national council on science and technology expected to be launched in 2011.
President Lee stated it is time for reform in education policy in preparation for the next 10 years when the number of students entering university is expected to drop by half due to the shrinking birthrate.
He also advised parents to push for more interest in natural science and engineering studies which have become rather unpopular over the years and expressed concerns over the excessive fervor of Korean parents for education.
[Interview : President Lee Myung-bak] "I believe more rationalized and reasonable zeal for education by Korean parents will produce better changes."
"우리 부모님들의 교육에 대한 열정도 더 합리적이고 또 이성적 열정을 갖고 하게 되면 더 좋은 변화가 많이 될 거라고"
Later in the day the President was briefed separately by the Korea Communications Commission and the culture ministry where he was presented measures to better prepare for the emerging 'SMART' generation a term referring to the advancement in digital devices and network technologies.
He was also informed of plans to expand welfare voucher programs‚ that enable low-income people to have access to cultural activities‚ and set up a code of ethics and monitoring organization for online journalism.
