Amid escalating tensions between the two Koreas over North Korea's lastest artillery attack on the South Korean island near the disputed western sea border last week South Korean leader and Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo held a one-on-one at the Presidential Office around 10 a.m. local time.
The meeting lasted for more than two hours as the two exchanged views on ways to deal with Tuesdays's bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island and discussed comprehensive measures to stabilize the situation on the Korean peninsula.
President Lee’s top aide for public relations‚ Hong Sang-pyo announced that the councilor visited Seoul as a special envoy with a message from Chinese leader Hu Jintao.
중국 측은 연평도 사태로 인한 한국 측 희생에 애도를 표하고 상황이 악화되지 않도록 함께 노력하겠다고 전했다. 앞으로 한반도 평화를 위해 한중간 전략적 소통과 협력을 강화해 나가길 희망했다.

Public Affairs at Presidential Office] "China offered its condolences over South Korea's loss in the deadly attack and stated that it would cooperate with Seoul to prevent the current situation from worsening. It also expressed its hope to boost strategic dialogue and cooperation between Seoul and Beijing for peace on the Korean peninsula."
To this President Lee said the South has long tolerated North Korea's endless provocations since the end of the Korean War but will resolutely respond to the communist state if it moves towards further provocative acts.
Stressing that Pyeongyang's recent revelation of uranium enrichment centrifuges followed by the reckless assault on South Korean civilians are a grave change in circumstances‚ President Lee called on China‚ North Korea's closest ally‚ to take a fair and responsible role to ensure peace on the Korean peninsula.
As to whether the Chinese official commented on the South Korea-US joint naval drill in West sea which began on Sunday the Presidential Office failed to comment.
Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo‚ one of the foremost figures of Chinese foreign policy who arrived on Saturday with Beijing's chief nuclear negotiator Wu Dawei is slated to travel to Pyeongyang to brief the North on Seoul's stance.
