The two-day Asia-Europe Meeting held in Brussels‚ Belgium has come to an end resulting in a chair's statement that expressed deep concern over North Korea's torpedo assault on the South Korea corvette‚ Cheonan in late March.
In a document leaders of Asia and European countries and organizations called on the communist state to denuclearize in a "complete‚ verifiable and irreversible manner" and refrain from further provocative acts.
It also acknowledged efforts to provide humanitarian support for the impoverished North while encouraging the recent decisions made by the two Koreas such as the holding of a reunion of families seperated by the Korean War.
The statement also took note of the establishment of Korea's Global Green Growth Institute calling for collaboration among ASEM nations for low-carbon‚ green economy and the upcoming nuclear security summit slated to be held in South Korea in 2012.
Meanwhile at a press conference of the coordinator of Northeast and South Asia Group at the ASEM President Lee spoke highly of the results of the summit especially the adoption of the "Brussels Declaration on more Effective Global Economic Governance."

[Interview : Korean President Lee Myung-bak] "This declaration is a vivid illustration of the strong political commitment by all participating leaders to working together in a bid to overcome the economic crisis and to establishing more effective global economic governance."
He vowed to utilize the upcoming G20 which selected "Shared Growth beyond Crisis" as its theme to realize sustainable and balanced growth of the global economy and implement reform of both international financial institutions and financial regulation.
Meanwhile Korean President Lee Myung-bak held a 40-minute bilateral summit with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao the first since May the two leaders exchanged views on peninsular issues boosting of Korea-China strategic cooperative partnership and Seoul's opening of the G20 summit.
