요약정보
On July 27th‚ 1953‚ US-led UN forces‚ China and North Korea signed an armistice agreement halting the three-year inter-Korean battle.
Despite the agreement‚ violence such as the axe murder incident when North Koreans soldiers brutally killed two US military officers with axes in the Joint Security Area continued to stain the divided peninsula.
The relationship between the two Koreas showed a gradual shift from confrontation to cooperation during the post-Cold War era with the historic first inter-Korean summit in 2000 but all efforts seem wasted following the deadly Cheonan incident that rattled the peninsula in March.
Rising tension between the two Koreas after the North's alleged torpedo attack is arousing serious concerns among political analysts as well as evoking the reclusive state to push for a third nuclear test.
In fact‚ North Korea's Minister of the People's Armed Forces‚ Kim Yong-chun‚ vowed to bolster the country's nuclear deterrence on Monday in response to the massive South Korea-U.S. joint military drill in the East Sea.
[Interview : ] "There will be physical retaliation based on our nuclear deterrence power‚ and we will enforce all kinds of measures to find out the truth about the Cheonan incident."

"필요한 임의식의 핵 억제력에 기초한 우리 식의 보복성전을 개시하게 될 것이라는 것과‚ 천안함 진상을 낱낱이 밝히기 위한 모든 조치들을 끝까지 취하게 될 것이라는 것을 엄숙히 천명했습니다."
Some argue‚ however‚ that such extreme circumstances can drive the leaders of the two Koreas to play a greater role in progressing the stalled talks by opening the possibility for further negotiations.
[Interview : ] "North-South relations have evolved‚ depending more on the brinkmanship of the two countries' leaders‚ than on gradual efforts to improve the situation. Radical circumstances can sometimes help the two Koreas out of the quagmire."
Fifty-seven years have past since the armistice was signed against South Korea's will but things have not changed much.
The tension between South and North Korea is perhaps at its highest since the Korean War and with the US and China continuing to flex their muscles in Northeast Asia the South Korean government again seems to have little say on its own security matters.
