요약정보
United States President Barack Obama seems to be getting ready to make a political bet on immigration reform and ratification of the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement.
Speaking at American University's School of International Service‚ the president said the US immigration policy is "broken and dangerous" and emphasized that the constant flow of immigrants helped make America what it is now.
[Interview : Barack Obama‚ US President] "In sum‚ the system is broken. And everybody knows it. Unfortunately‚ reform has been held hostage to political posturing and special-interest wrangling. and to the pervasive sentiment in Washington that tackling such a thorny and emotional issue is inherently bad politics."
Obama called for Republican support saying that although he and Democrats are ready to overhaul the immigration policy legislation will not be able to pass through Congress without Republican votes.
He also mentioned the need for policies that can give legal status to the 11 million illegal immigrants in the nation.
[Interview : Barack Obama‚ US President] "We need to provide farms a legal way to hire the workers they rely on‚ and a path for those workers to earn legal status."
Reports say Obama's push to get the reform passed within this year is to reach out to Hispanic voters that showed discontent after the US President failed to carry out his campaign pledge to reform the immigration system.
More than two-third of the Hispanic population in the country supported him during the 2008 presidential election.
Meanwhile‚ Obama has also took a big step forward with the free trade deal that was signed between Korea and the US three years ago.
Although he is facing strong resistance from US labor unions he made it clear that his administration will complete talks on the pact before the two leaders meet in November.
Observers point out that Obama could have weighed political pros and cons before making his remarks as support from labor unions could be strenghtened if he draws concessions from Seoul on beef and automobiles during the working-level readjustment.
