Nearly 600 publishers and trade visitors representing 21 countries gathered at the Coex Convention Center in Seoul on Wednesday to launch the largest book fair in Korea.
Cultural minister Yoo In-chon was also present expressing high hopes for the synergy effect the fair could bring to the Korean and foreign publishing industries.
Organized by the committee for the Seoul International Book Fair the event provides readers a rare opportunity to observe thousands of books varying in genre and country of origin all in one place.

" We have been doing book fairs since 1954 and now the event has grown to be the nation's largest book festival attracting about 600 publishers worldwide."
In particular over 100 publishers from France are participating to present the multiplicity of their productions as France is this year's guest country of honor.

"There is already a great activity‚ about 800 French books have been translated into Korean last year and we expect an increase of that movement of course."
Under the slogan 'Read France' the fair provides opportunities to meet some of the most prominent figures in French literature.
Bernard Werber Korea's most beloved foreign writer flew a long way to meet his ardent fans here.
During an hour-long talk. he shared his childhood stories and gave advice on how to become a better writer.
[Reporter : ] "All the book lovers out there will also get a chance to enjoy a series of book-related exhibitions here at Coex."
An illustrators' wall which features over 300 selected designs from the best picture books of 2008 and 2009 captures spectators' eyes.
A metal-type printing method is also demonstrated offering visual explanation of the traditional process.
Another exhibition booth invites visitors to witness 100 years of modern Korean history through the nation's historical literature.
The festival will continue until the 16th and is expected to contribute significantly in promoting a myriad of books as well as boost cultural exchanges between Korea and other participating countries.
