In Confucius society‚ the young must respect their parents and teachers since its philosophy emphasizes personal morality‚ justice and sincerity.
Korean society is deeply influenced by this philosophy rooted from the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty.
During those times studying Chinese characters was mandatory to read and write.
But as the digital era has rapidly developed Koreans today tend to neglect the importance of Chinese characters.
Though just as a large portion of English words are derived from Latin about 70 percent of Korean which is a phonetic language is based on these characters.
This is a scene at a day-care center in the Gangdong district where kids between the ages of 5 and 6 take Chinese character lessons as well as learn manners based on the ancient philosophy of Confucius.
However they are not ordinary children but bright young scholars who have passed the test in November last year to obtain Chinese Character certificates.
[Interview : ]
"My friends are so jealous of me‚ because now I can read and write difficult Chinese characters"
"그림일기도 쓸 수 있고 어려운 책도 읽을 수 있고 친구들이 부러워해요."
[Interview : ]
"It's really fun to learn Chinese characters together with my friends and the teacher. Here I get to know how to read and write things that most of my friends don't even understand".
"선생님이랑 한자 같이 하는 것이랑 한자시험 그리고 한자 쓰는 것도 재미있어요. 그리고 친구들은 모르는데 저는 다 알고 있어요."
These bright youngsters took everyone by surprise when they passed the proficiency test with an average mark of 95 points which means they can all read and write about 50 to 100 Chinese characters which is difficult for most adults.
[Interview : ]
I am so pleased that every student here passed the test with high marks. I would like to thank parents and the other teachers for their great support."
The teacher is very pleased with his young and talented students and he wishes that more parents were aware of the importance of Chinese characters.
The class has been open to the public since 2005.
It not only teaches young children to understand commonly used Chinese characters but‚ also Confucian manners.
