The Korean government is going all-out to create jobs this year with the goal of becoming the country with the best remedy for the unemployment issue that has been plaguing OECD member nations.
And at the government's weekly emergency economic meeting on Thursday President Lee Myung-bak presided over the first such session exclusively focused on employment.
The Korean president first called on businesses in the nation to take the lead saying it should not be the government who provides the bulk of the jobs that the country needs‚ although he added that his administration and the National Assembly will do their part to help.
President Lee also added that job creation will also be a major part of the G20 summit agenda this year since a number of countries are struggling with a severe unemployment problem.

While evaluating Korea to be faring relatively better than other countries in terms of its unemployment rate‚ the President said that his government will focus on helping young people in Korea find work as well as those who have retired early.
All this he said is part of his government's goal to resolve the issue faster than in any other OECD member state.

Hit hard by the global economic crisis just like many other countries around the world Korea has managed to prevent joblessness from skyrocketing through its quick and aggressive stimulus measures and "job sharing" initiatives through which jobs are not eliminated are instead maintained via reduced hours or through pay cuts.
According to government statistics the unemployment rate hit just 3.6 percent last year.
