The Dubai government announced it will freeze the debt repayments of a key state company which has sent the global stock market into a tailspin on Wednesday.
Major markets in Europe were hit hardest after European banks' shares plunged amid fears that THEY may be most vulnerable to Dubai's debt decision.
In a statement the Dubai government said it would ask all creditors of global investor Dubai World and its sister company Nakheel to delay their debt repayments until at least May next year.
Dubai says the debt freeze was the first step toward restructuring the two firms.
Dubai World is reportedly under a heap of debt that's close to 60 billion dollars.
